I'd love to tell you I nailed it first try. I'd be lying.

It took me a long time, a lot of late nights, and an honestly embarrassing amount of banging my head against the wall to design and refine it. And once I had a prototype, the real work started — testing, tweaking, and re-machining version after version after version until the action was exactly right. Then doing it again, because "almost right" has never been good enough for me.

The CNC machining of it proved tricky in its own right. A mechanism like this lives or dies on tolerances measured in fractions of a millimetre, and getting a machine to hit that, reliably, every single time, is a fight.

But we got there. And all the blood, sweat and tears were worth it — because the mechanism ended up working even better than I'd hoped. (And I'm a pretty optimistic guy to begin with.)

The mechanism turned out so well that I was approached by the top titanium pen maker in the world — who asked if they could license it from me.

Let that sink in for a second. Not copy it. License it — because it couldn't simply be knocked off.

After a bit of back and forth, we struck a deal. So yes — there's now another respected maker out there using this exact mechanism, under licence, from what started as a one-man shop in New Zealand.

The Ultra-Smooth Action (And My Favourite "Magic Metal")

Let me be flat-out honest with you about how this V4 came to be — because it's a good story and it tells you everything about how I work.

When I first designed the mechanism, I was hoping I could run it on raw titanium throughout. And it worked... for a little while. Then it slowly started losing its smoothness.

If you're a bit of a titanium geek like me, you'll know exactly what was happening: galling — that microscopic titanium-on-titanium grabbing that robs a mechanism of its silky feel.

I could have shrugged and shipped it anyway. Plenty would have. Instead I went back to the bench and kept tweaking — different materials, different combinations — until one clear winner emerged:

304 Stainless Steel.

It turns out 304 is a kind of "magic metal" for this application. Not only is it the smoothest of everything I tested by a country mile... it actually gets smoother the more you use it. Every click polishes it a little further.

That's the secret behind the 100,000-click promise. This pen doesn't wear out. It wears in.

A Titanium Spring (The Part No One Else Will Attempt)

As far as I know, I'm still the only person in the world precision-machining a pen spring from titanium.

Almost everyone else — including the big-name "premium" brands — drops in a bog-standard, off-the-shelf steel spring and calls it a day. You're paying luxury money for the same coil that's in a $2 pen.

Not here. The spring inside the ClickShift™ is machined from titanium, by me, and it's unique to this pen. It has to be — because the nature of the ClickShift™ mechanism demands a spring with very specific characteristics that simply don't exist off the shelf.

Is it a hassle to make? Yes. Genuinely.

Is it worth it? Absolutely. Every time.

A Machined Pocket Clip (Because Even The Clip Matters)

You've probably worked out by now that I don't make compromises when I design a pen. Best materials, best methods, full stop.

Most makers use a stamped-and-bent pocket clip. It's functional, it's cheap, it hits a price point — and it's not for me.

The clip on the ClickShift™ is fully machined, not stamped. No mass-production methods touch it. I treat the clip as a functional and visually important part of the pen, and it gets exactly as much care in design, machining and finishing as any other component. It's not an afterthought. Nothing on this pen is.

You're reading this on a site full of fidgets, so you already know what I'm about to say — but it has to be said:

The ClickShift™ is a very, VERY fidget-able pen.

Our Famous Matte Surface Finish

We're known for our signature Matte finish. I know — "Matte" doesn't sound fancy. But it's the result of a genuinely involved process.

After each component comes off the CNC machine, it's sanded, deburred, and multi-stage tumbled by hand until it reaches that distinctive, understated surface. The end result is a finish that's beautifully tactile and fairly scratch-resistant (not perfectly — nothing is — but it wears gracefully and only looks better with a little honest use).

A Slightly More Substantial Body — On Purpose

If you know my work, you'll know every previous pen I've made (three pens and a mechanical pencil) has been 9mm in diameter — fairly slim by market standards, and much loved for it.

The ClickShift™ is my first step into something a touch more substantial: 9.5mm (0.375").

My pens sit at the higher end of the market, in both quality and price. I make no compromises in the design and machining of the ClickShift™, and doing everything in-house — rather than outsourcing overseas — genuinely costs more to produce.
